Great effort from Bishopton Ladies
Bishopton Ladies made a great impact at the first of their six development fixtures this season.
The ladies made a long journey to Forfar for their opening SRU West/Caledonia and Midlands Development matches.
The format for the day was three games of sevens with a shortened 15-a-side game to finish.
Bishopton faced strong opposition from Cumbernauld RFC Ladies, Dundee Women’s Rugby and home team Strathmore Women’s RFC who were out in force both on the pitch and along the sidelines at Inchmacoble Park.
Only three of the Bishopton squad had played a contact game before, and they showed incredible strength and determination in the face of three more experienced opposition sides.
Indeed , Bishopton won their game first against Cumbernauld and competed well against Dundee and Strathmore, scoring some great tries in the three games.
In true rugby spirit, a joint team comprising Bishopton, Cumbernauld and Dundee combined to face the final 15-a-side game against Strathmore.
This was hard fought with many of the players forming their first scrums, mauls and lineouts, but the players were learning fast and held their own to make great contributions to the game.
A spokesman for the club said:“Player of the Match went to Eilidh Grant for great tackles, chases and some amazing play after only turning to rugby in the last few weeks with a handful of training sessions under her belt.
“The Glue Player went to Fiona Findlay for her supporting play and rucking. Fiona is another player who has gone from swearing she would not play contact rugby to volunteering for flanker a few months in!
“All in all it was a great effort from each and every player, and we look forward to the next development fixture at Bishopton’s Holmpark on October 6.
“We will welcome eight teams for another great day of ladies rugby development.”
