a Striker Danny Mullen insists he is the ready-made answer to Saints goalscoring woes.

Mullen has been restricted to substitute appearances at the start of this campaign, with manager Jim Goodwin preferring summer signings Jonathan Obika and Junior Morias up front.

With both failing to notch goals in the opening six Premiership games, Mullen is confident he can get the Buddies firing.

Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, he said: “If I get on the pitch and get more game time I’m confident the goals will come.

“Last season I started well but then I got injured and it was a stop-start season for me after that.

“Jim’s a new manager and he’s brought his signings in so I was kind of expecting that he would start to play his signings.

“But if they’re not going to do the business I’ll be there to pick it up and hopefully I can do it and get the goals.

“The strikers all want to get their first goal away.

“It’s not happened for the boys that have been playing but I’m confident in my ability that when I get my chance I can take it.”

Mullen came on from the bench as St Mirren tried and failed to break through a stubborn Hamilton defence on Saturday.

Although he couldn’t find a winner, the 24- year- old former Livingston hitman hopes he did enough to convince Goodwin he deserves more minutes on the pitch.

He said: “Hamilton was a frustrating game. We didn’t get the result we wanted, especially after they went down to ten men.

“We always knew it was going to be a tough game, but they’re the games when it comes to the end of the season that you look back and think we should have got three points.

“Jim has told me just to do what I do.

“I’ve not featured as much this season but he gave me a chance and I thought I did alright when I went on.

“It wasn’t to be but the boys are focused on Hearts now, so we’re looking forward to that game.”

Mullen revealed the mood in the camp is still upbeat heading into the match against Craig Levein’s Jambos this weekend.

And he believes his side have

no one to fear in the league, even powerful Hearts striker Uche Ikpeazu.

He added: “The camp’s very positive and we’re still looking at every game we go into that we can get points from them.

“It would be worrying if the performances hadn’t been there but they have. It’s just the little tiniest thing that might need to change.

“We just need to turn the performances into points.

“Hearts is going to be a tough game. We know that, but we’re at home and we’ll be expecting to pick up points.

“Uche is a big strong guy, and he does score goals but our defence has been very good.

“We’ve done well at home against Aberdeen, Rangers and Hamilton.

“We’ve got players in our changing room that can match him and outmatch him.

“We’re confident. We don’t look at a player and think he’s going to be too good for us today.

“There are good players in this league but in our changing room we’ve got a good group of players that, on their day, can beat anyone.”
