‘I’ve been involved in far worse conditions’

-

St Mirren gaffer Jim Goodwin rubbished Gary Holt’s claims that Saturday’s clash should have been abandoned.

Livingston boss Holt revealed after the match he would have supported the referee’s decision to stop play in the horrendous conditions.

But Goodwin believes there wouldn’t be many games left on in Scotland if swirling winds were a factor in pulling the plug on fixtures.

Goodwin said:“I wouldn’t have supported the game getting called off. I’ve played in worse conditions than that.

“I think that the country that we live in, if we’re going to call games off for high winds then we’ll probably not kick a ball.

“If the pitch is under water I’d completely agree. It was the same for both teams.

“It was horrendous and it wasn’t a pretty game of

football. We knew it would be that way but I think both sets of players deserve a lot of credit for the way they went about it. It was competitive and they both gave their all.

“I felt before the game the team that makes the least amount of mistakes would win and, as it balanced out, both made a fair few mistakes and a point was probably fair.”

St Mirren’s new strikeforce of Jon Obika and Junior Morias came up trumps as they linked up for Saints’ opener before Obika grabbed a well-deserved brace.

And Goodwin was delighted for the duo after doubts were raised early this campaign when they both struggled to find the back of the net.

He said:“I’m delighted for the big man (Obika). He dropped his runner for the second goal so he owed the team.

“I’m really pleased for him and Junior as well because question marks were asked of the strikers early on in the season and rightly so.

“But we knew the quality that both players possessed in terms of their physical attributes and work rate for the team.

“I had every confidence that the goals would come.”

While Goodwin and the club are currently working on their winter transfer targets, the manager revealed he is more than happy with the four strikers he has at his disposal heading in to 2020.

He added:“I don’t think I ever said I was looking for a striker, but I did stress that the strikers needed to get up and running and start scoring goals.

“We are always looking at every position but I’m happy with the four that I’ve got.

“They all give me different options and there’s a good blend there, so I’m happy to go into the second half of the season with those four.”
