A LESSON IN CARING

Castlehead pupils give hundreds of gifts to needy kids

Pupils at a Paisley high school have done their bit to give youngsters in need a special Christmas by collecting hundreds of toy donations.

Kindhearted Castlehead High School kids were delighted to spread some festive cheer to fellow pupils in the school following the success of the bumper gift collection.

Senior pupils decided to launch the toy appeal in September, asking their classmates to bring donations of books, games and toys in to school to pay for their non-uniform day on St Andrew’s Day rather than making a traditional donation of £1.

More than 700 pupils across S1-S6 at the Canal Street school participated in the event over the past few months, resulting in hundreds of gifts being given out to children through the school’s linked social workers.

And teacher Sandra Reilly says the school was left overwhelmed by the response from youngsters.

She said: “We were absolutely delighted with how many donations we received.

“It completley exceeded our expectations.

“The pictures taken don’t even do it justice. Almost every pupil brought donations in to be given out to pupils who maybe were not going to get gifts at Christmas time.

“The senior pupils did really well, and they were run off their feet collecting everything together and getting it ready to be given out to other children.

“We were totally overwhelmed by it all. It was a fantastic success.

“The pupils were so pleased with how many donations they managed to collect.

“There was a fantastic selection of things gathered for children.”

The toys have now all been collected by the high school’s home link social workers, who are now working hard to distribute them to children in need in time for Christmas.

Sandra added: “We wanted to make sure we had enough time to get everything together in time for Christmas.

“We know they are now giving them out to children and we are so happy that it was so successful.”
