A R e n f r ews h i r e community garden is now tarmacked and wheelchair friendly thanks to a building firm’s blooming brilliant donation.

Mactaggart & Mickel’s Building Communities Fund contributed £ 1,000 to the Rhombus Community Garden, which is based within Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands.

Maintained by volunteers, the garden needed a full makeover and work was carried out by the charity.

However, plans to create a wheelchair friendly path to improve access stalled due to a lack of funds.

The contribution from Mactaggart & Mickel, whose Midton Fields development is near by, has been put towards tarmacking the pathway.

Joanne Casey, director at Mactaggart & Mickel, said: “We are delighted to make this contribution towards such a valued and important community space, and also to recognise the hard work put in by volunteers in the village to ensure its benefits can be enjoyed by all.

“We are proud to have become a part of the Howwood community and happy to be leaving this further legacy behind for our residents and neighbours.”

Bill David, chair of Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands, said: “Thanks to Mactaggart & Mickel for this donation, which will go towards the further development of our Rhombus Community Garden’s paths and seating area.

“The funds will help to provide tarmac paths, which will benefit all and allow the easy access for wheelchairs, as well as families with prams and buggies.

“This area is also popular with walkers, cyclists, residents and not forgetting the local school children, who in the past, helped us by erecting bat and bird boxes on trees in this area.”

The Building Communities Fund was established to help organisations and projects that enhance the lives of people within their communities.

Applications for funding are assessed and awarded by a cross section of Mactaggart & Mickel employees.

The fund is open throughout the year to applications from charities, community groups, sports teams and schools whose work is instrumental in communities near to any Mactaggart & Mickel development
