Paisley’s Feed your Family mum to give away ‘basics’ chapter of top selling book

- EDEL KENEALY

The Paisley mum behind the hugely successful Feed You Family for about £20 a week Facebook page is giving away a section of her book to ensure people can eat healthy, balanced meals during the crisis.

Lorna Cooper, 43, who has a global following for her costsaving recipes online, is giving people the basics chapter of her cook book, published earlier this year.

The section explains how people can make the store cupboard essentials that they are unable to get in shops such as yoghurt and jam.

Lorna, from Hunterhill, told the Express: “The section includes recipes such as how to make flat breads with flour and water, how to make yoghurt and jam and how to make a tomato-based sauce and a white sauce. Basic things that you can make from stuff that you have in your house anyway.”

Lorna, who has three kids and two step-children, began looking at ways to cut her food bill when she suffered a slipped disc and was forced to stop working six years ago.

The experience of trying to make ends meet means Lorna knows firsthand how those who have lost their income as a result of the enforced lockdown are struggling.

“It makes me want to help people,” Lorna added.

“This is why I asked my publisher if we could release the basics section of the book.

“Now with most of the tricks, people can reduce what they are spending.”

Lorna’s Feed Your Family Facebook page has become a one- stop shop for people cooking on a budget and now has a wealth of information and recipes to support people feeding households during lockdown.

The page and associated website is now showing people how to substitute ingredients in meals for what they already have at home.

Lorna has also produced charts showing her fans what spices are similar in case they don’t have the one listed in the recipe, as well as how much dried herbs to use when the recipe calls for fresh.

Explaining that she and her husband have been in self -isolation because they both have heart conditions, Lorna said she was working hard at home to help people as much as possible.

She said: “If there is anything else you want, you need, that you are struggling with then send us a message, comment on the Facebook page and if we can help you then we will.

“We have a lot of resources here so if there is something you are particularly looking for give us a shout.

“We will get through this without going hungry.”

People who would like the basics section of Lorna’s book can register for a copy on her website fyf20quid.co.uk

They will then receive the PDF via email which they can download and print.
