Terror as boy, 12, finds thief at grandad’s

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A terrified 12- yearold boy came face to face with a thief rummaging through drawer sin his grandad’s Paisley house.

The schoolboy thought a family member had arrived at the Dalskeith Road home in the Ferguslie area of the town but instead found a crook rifling through belongings, police revealed.

It is understood the youngster managed to raise the alarm during the incident, which happened around 10.30pm on Sunday night.

His 68- year-old grandfather was also at home at the time.

The sneak thief was able to make off before cops arrived. Some of the property stolen was recovered nearby.

Chief Inspector Jim Cast, area commander for Renfrewshire appealed for witnesses and urged anyone with information to come forward.

He said: “This must have been a very distressing incident for the young boy involved.

“We are very keen to trace the individual responsible for this incident and we are carrying out a number of enquiries in an effort to do that in the area.”

And police have not ruled out the possibility the incident could be linked to another theft in the area the same night.

This time a family confronted a man in black clothing in their house in Westwood Gardens as he tried to steal a PlayStation.

This incident happened around 9pm the same night as the Dalskeith Road break-in.

Chief Inspector cast added: “Given the similarity, time frame and proximity, it is possible these two incidents could be linked, however we are keeping an open mind at this stage.”

He said: “I would also like to ask homeowners to make sure their doors are locked, even if they are at home – particularly in the Ferguslie area of Paisley, where we have seen a number of incidents of theft recently.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
