- DAVID CAMPBELL

A man was hospitalised after a thug hit him over the head with a bag of shopping.

The 30-year-old was whacked in Gauze Street, Paisley, after getting into an argument with a lout in the street.

Police say the victim suffered a one-inch cut to his head in the attack, which happened around 12.30pm on Wednesday.

It’s understood the pair became embroiled in a heated exchange in the Piazza Centre before the violence erupted outside.

The victim was hit on the head with shopping, leaving him with a nasty gash on his head.

He was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, for treatment to his wound and later released.

Detectives are scouring CCTV footage and searching for potential witnesses in a bid to identify the attacker.

They are now appealing for anyone who saw what happened to come forward.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley’s community policing team, said: “A 30- year- old man suffered a laceration to his head after another male struck him in the head with an item during an altercation in Paisley’s Gauze Street on Wednesday afternoon.

“The victim required hospital treatment for the injury and was later released.

“This was an unsavoury attack that took place in broad daylight in a potentially busy street.

“We are treating the attack as a serious assault and we are carrying out a range of enquiries to establish who was responsible.”

She added: “This incident took place in the middle of the day and it is likely, despite lockkdown, that other members of the public may have witnessed what happened.

“If you saw the assault take place, please get in touch with officers.

“Similarly, if you were driving in the area, I would ask you to check dashcam footage to see if you captured anything which may be useful to our investigation.”
