A helping hand for Rekz’s food deliveries

Supermarket bosses have joined forces with a kind- hearted Paisley shopkeeper in getting food to the vulnerable during the Covid-19 crisis.
Morrisons have hooked up with Rekz Afzal in distributing free provisions to families in the area, as many households are struggling to get groceries, especially the elderly and those who are self- isolating during the lockdown.
Sharon Dennison, community champion for Morrisons Anchor Mills, told how the retail giant is handing out £ 10million worth of shopping to communities across the country during the crisis.
And she was impressed at the work Rekz has been doing with the Community Cabinet and Fridge, which is based at his shop, RSA Newsagents, in the town’s Moss Street.
Sharon said: “Morrisons is donating £10m worth of foods to charities and groups across the UK during the Covid-19 crisis, and as part of this, we are working with organisations in Paisley, Barrhead and across Renfrewshire.
“We heard about the work that Rekz, the gentleman with his business in Moss Street, has been doing and wanted to help by supplying donations of food.”
Sharon added she is working with a number of other groups and care homes in the area in distributing £ 1,000 worth of groceries every week, including the Star Project, Renfrewshire Foodbank, Pals of the Privies and a string of sheltered housing complexes.
Rekz praised the contribution from Morrisons as vital in helping maintain the lifeline to the community, which has been running for more than three years, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
He said: “Sharon heard about the project I have been running and said she was looking at supporting the initiative with donations of food.
“As community champion for Morrisons she felt it was important to help stock our Community Fridge and Cabinet with donations.
“These have been very welcome in maintaining stocks for food for vulnerable people in the Paisley area.”
Rekz added he has received deliveries of canned goods, pasta, sauces and packets of groceries including cereals from the supermarket.
He also thanked Nicola Douglas from Morrisons at Falside Road in the town for handing in donations to the Moss Street shop for distributing in the community.
