Workers attacked as they challenge would-be shoplifter

A yob attacked two female shop workers and made off after they bravely tried to stop him shopliftin­g.

The quick-thinking staff at the B& M Store in Renfrew Road, Paisley intervened when they spotted the man trying to walk out with a bag of goods without paying.

But the thug lashed out at the pair, aged 27 and 46, before running off, police revealed.

He punched both victims on the body during the incident, which happened around 3.30pm on Tuesday.

The shop workers did not sustain any serious injuries but have been left shaken, officers investigat­ing said.

Po l i c e have now launched an appeal for wi t n e s s e s to come forward and said they will be carrying out enquiries in the area to identify the suspect.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, below, from Paisley’s community policing team, said: “We are investigat­ing after two female shop workers were assaulted by a man at the B& M Store in Renfrew Road, Paisley, around 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

“The victims both suffered minor injuries but did not need medical treatment.

“We are carrying out enquiries in an effort to identify the person responsibl­e, including checking CCTV.”

She added: “I would urge anyone who might have witnessed what happened to come forward to police immediatel­y.

“It is likely the area would have been busy with other shoppers, you might have seen something and not realised at the time what was happening, if so we would like to speak to you.

Me a n w h i l e , officers are probing a break-in in Paisley’s Stock Street.

Police were called to reports a 61-year-old man’s flat had been ransacked.

It is understood nothing was taken during the break-in.

The incident happened at

around 1.50pm on Tuesday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “If you saw anything suspicious in the area then we would like to hear from you.”
