TAKE A BOW TANNAHILL

- ALISON RENNIE

It was party time in Ferguslie Park as the community came together to celebrate the Tannahill Centre’s 25th birthday.

The community centre at the heart of the area had asked people to sign up to receive party packs which contained everything needed for a celebration.

Around 200 bags were distributed by volunteers and people were then asked to spend the week preparing – making a poster, birthday card, bunting and a cake all ready for a party.

These residents of Blackstoun Road even took to their gardens and enjoyed a street party to celebrate.

Jamie Mallan from the Tannahill Centre said: “We’ve had some really positive feedback from everyone who took part.

“We had families engaging with the activities all through the week, including families who we’ve never worked with before which was really good.

“We’re thinking about repeating it over the summer holidays because it was so successful.

“People were sending us photos of each day’s task to our Facebook page and we had to pick winners – which was really hard.

“They received a £25 JustEat voucher.

“Loads of people had parties in their house with balloons and streamers, it was great to see.

“We’re totally overwhelmed by the community response to it – it was fantastic.”

The Tannahill Centre was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth on July 5, 1995.

Since then the community hub has been home to a number of essential services like its GP, library and pharmacy, as well as hosting annual events such as the gala day, winter festival and Burns events.
