Co-op superheroes are charity champs

- CARLA TALBOT

Staff at Co-op supermarkets across Renfrewshire donned their superhero capes for the day to help raise cash for a mental health charity.

Teams at the Co- op stores in Renfrew and Bishopton took part in a Superhero Day to help raise funds for the Scottish Association for Mental Health ( SAMH), raising more than £ 1000 for the organisation.

The teams at both sites dressed in their best superhero outfits and held a collection for the charity - which promotes mental health and well-being services in communities across Scotland.

The event took place in Co-op stores across the country, and Coop bosses decided the superhero theme was appropriate given how hard their staff have worked throughout the pandemic.

Elaine Wotherspoon, who is the member pioneer for Paisley and Renfrew Co-op stores, organised the day at Renfrew - which saw the staff host a colouring competition for children at nearby Three Bears Nursery.

Elaine praised the hardworking staff who she says deserve superhero titles for their efforts.

Elaine, from Paisley, said: “We are really proud of our staff and how they have worked during the pandemic.

“It has been business as usual in supermarkets and they have worked so hard and they are still going out of their way during a stressful time to raise money for charity.

She added: “We think it’s really important to focus on your health and well-being so we were really happy to promote the work that SAMH does.”

The Co-op in Bishopton also had plenty of fun activities on offer, with goodie bags for youngsters who visited the store and a raffle to raise cash for the charity.

Manager at Bishopton, Stewart Freeman was delighted with the success of the day - which raised £800 for SAMH.

He said: “The team dressed up as superheroes which was deemed to be quite apt after the last few months!

“We had a raffle, goodie bags and balloons for the kids. Jamie, who was dressed as the joker, locked our colleague Allison, who was dressed as Robin in a cage and she could only be released if one of the children found a batman in their goodie bag!”
