It’s time to get tough on the danger drivers

Plea by councillor as families tell of roads chaos

- STEPH BRAWN LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

A Renfrew councillor is continuing to push for more safety measures to be put in place on dangerous roads in the town after receiving further complaints from residents about speeding vehicles and drunk driving.

Councillor Jane Strang says she is still getting a large number of messages from her constituents about racing quad bikes and motorbikes around Sandy Road and Broadloan.

The Renfrew North and Braehead representative has already highlighted the issue to cops, who have agreed to come up with an action plan to tackle issues around the area.

But Councillor Strang has now insisted, since she continues to receive complaints about dangerous driving on a regular basis, Renfrewshire Council must also step in and address the issues for residents, who say their quality of life is being affected by the problem.

“Concerns continue to be raised with me by constituents on an extremely regular basis over speeding and dangerous driving and the problems need to be tackled once and for all,” said Councillor Strang.

“I have been liaising closely with local police officers and it is welcome that the new community inspector Allan O’Hare is collating information to put an action plan in place.

“All too often we are seeing serious accidents, near misses, speeding and drunk and dangerous driving which is putting the quality of life for residents around this area at continued risk.

“I also call on Renfrewshire Council to respond to the UK Government’s consultation on pedestrian crossings to see if any funding could potentially be used in Renfrew.

“I hope this action plan will have the long-term measures in order to address safety concerns once and for all and I will continue to liaise with officers, the local community and other stakeholders.”

The UK Government launched a consultation last month on reviewing aspects of the Highway Code to improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.

It proposes introducing a hierarchy of road users which ensures those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they pose to others, as well as clarifying existing rules on pedestrian priority on pavements.

Renfrewshire Council said it is supportive of the proposed changes to the code and will continue to work with police to consider any further safety measures which need to be put in place in Sandy Road and Broadloan.

A council spokesman said: “The safety of road users and pedestrians is a priority and this location currently has speed bumps to calm traffic and a zebra crossing on each road.

“We continue to work in partnership with Police Scotland to identify the reasons behind any incidents and will consider any further appropriate measures.

“We are supportive of the proposed changes to the Highway Code to improve pedestrian safety which are focused on guiding the behaviour and attitude of road users.”
