LET’S STICK TOGETHER

- BEN RAMAGE Tait and his Buddies

St Mirren defender Richard Tait believes his new Buddies are already a well-formed unit.

Former Motherwell full back Tait was one of five summer recruits that started the Buddies clash with Ross County on Saturday.

Despite going down to ten men with 30 minutes to go, when one of those new signings Joe Shaughnessey saw red, the Saints held firm and bagged a point.

And 30-year-old Tait believes the way his new teammates saw out the game shows they are all pulling in the same direction already, despite their lack of gametime on the park.

He told Express Sport : “The togetherness we showed after the red card was excellent.

“The red card is one of those things. It happens in football and you just have to stick together.

“We showed that for the last 30 minutes.

“The togetherness in the dressing room is massive for us and everyone on that pitch is fighting for the same cause.

“It was good to see. We stuck together and got the point.

“When you go down to 10 men and get a point it’s a positive one. We’re all happy in the dressing room.

“You’ve got to stick together as a team and it’s nice to see when you’re in that position you can do that and grind it out when you need to.”

Tait has made an excellent impression so far in the stripes, and again played a key role with a vital acrobatic clearance off the line from a goalbound Ross

Stewart header.

And he believes his superior agility is down to regular cross fit sessions in the gym, which he thinks may have played a part in his stunning clearance.

He joked: “Let’s give it credit shall we? We’ll say it’s that.

“It was a right-footed cross and an inswinger. Stewart’s great in the air and I knew he was going to win it.

“Luckily for me I was in the position where it went so there was some luck in it too.

“I didn’t feel like my leg was that high. I’m just glad it didn’t go in the back of the net. If it had it would have been a sickener because at that time we were on top.”

There was confusion on the pitch on Saturday as Joe Shaughnessy was sent off on the hour mark, despite the referee initially waving play on.

Tait wants to put the incident behind him and focus on the positives as the Saints picked up yet another point, with their defeat away at Rangers their only black mark of the campaign so far.

He added: “The referee has to make a decision.

“He’s there to control the game and if that’s the way he feels, when decisions like that are made, you just have to accept it.

“There’s a fourth official there for a reason. “They and the assistants make a decision and if that’s the decision then we have to accept it.

“Joe is all right. I think he just went in there and made a good tackle, he thought.

“But it’s been and gone and we got a point out of the game.”
