Funding campaign launched to help Sma’ Shot Cottages

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A campaign is underway to save Paisley’s historic Sma’ Shot Cottages after coronavirus halted vital fundraising efforts.

The Old Paisley Society, which maintains the 18th century weavers cottages, has issued a rallying cry to generous Buddies to help keep the site afloat.

The charity said the Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on its ability to raise the money it needs to maintain the dayto-day running of one of the town’s best-loved attractions.

But now they are hoping people will dig deep and donate to save the site from closure.

An online fundraising page which aims to collect £2,000 has already taken in £1,500 - with donations still flooding in.

The Old Paisley Society is calling on everyone to back the effort to support their work and make sure the historic site, a relic from the town’s prestigious industrial past, remains open.

A spokeswoman said: “We’re appealing to all of our visitors, supporters and friends.

“Though we haven’t been able to open this year, our work to preserve both the built fabric of the Sma’ Shot Cottages complex and the remarkable collections within continues. We have enjoyed sharing the history and heritage of Paisley’s textile past with you online, including on Sma’ Shot Day. However, current circumstances have impacted our fundraising efforts.

“This is where we need your help. We are raising funds for day- to- day expenses of maintaining the historic eighteenth century weavers cottage and nineteenth century mill workers cottages, including essential insurances.

“Our goal is to raise £2,000.”

She added: “JustGiving sends your donation straight to the Old Paisley Society, Sma’ Shot Cottages, and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.

“As always, your donations are truly appreciated, and we send our sincerest thanks for your support. Take care, spread love and share kindness. With much love from all of the volunteers of the Old Paisley Society, Sma Shot Cottages.”

The Sma’ Shot Cottages complex is unique in Scotland.

It provides visitors with the opportunity to see two distinct periods in Paisley’s weaving history.

Life both in the late 1700s and early to mid-1800s can be experienced there in a small row of three cottages comprising five dwelling houses.
