UFO mystery

-

Four men working on the construction of a 15-storey block of flats in the Blackhall area of Paisley in the winter of 1959 were astonished to see a‘spaceship’ soaring across the sky.

They watched the unidentified object for more than a minute and endeavoured to attract the attention of other workers on the ground but the saucer disappeared in the direction of Greenock.

Crane driver John Coleman was the first to notice the strange object, which he described as cylindrical in shape, silver coloured and flying at great speed and height.

Jerry Kearns, 24, of Craigmuir Road, Paisley, was working on top of the 120-feet-high scaffolding when his attention was drawn to the object.

At first, he thought it an ordinary aircraft – before noticing it had no wings.

A foreman at the site said there was no doubt the men had seen something very unusual and added that they were not the type to make a fuss without good reason.

Even after being subjected to some inevitable leg-pulling by fellow workers, they refused to change their stories.

It was suggested that stranger things had been seen in Paisley ... but only on pay day!

Officials at the Meteorological Office in Renfrew could give no explanation for the mystery object.
