Robbed ... but not of victory

-

After a thrilling football match between two YMCA teams back in 1959, the 22 mud-splattered players made their way back to the dressing rooms at St James’s Park.

Once there, they were disgusted to find that a low-life thief had sneaked in and rifled through their pockets.

The burglar had forced the lock on the dressing room doors and systematically turned out the pockets of every player.

The footballers, who were taking part in a charity match between Greenlaw and Lylesland, lost money, wallets, cigarettes and lighters.

One player even lost a set of false teeth!

Only a few left the ground with their belongings intact.

One player said:“This kind of thing would put you off playing football.

“Let it be a warning to others who play at St James’s.”

While the Burgh CID investigated, there was at least some consolation for the Greenlaw boys, who thrashed their opponents 9-1.
