Volunteers save community council

- Tony Lawler is the chair of Foxbar and Brediland Community Council ALISON RENNIE

A Paisley community council has been saved after enough volunteers came forward.

The Foxbar and Brediland Community Council was in danger of folding due to a lack of volunteers after only seven people were nominated in the community council elections in 2019.

The group quickly managed to recruit another five volunteers by the deadline in March 2020 to enable it to continue. The community council had to have a minimum of ten people on it by the end of March or it would have folded. But , due to the pandemic, the new group of volunteers were unable to hold their inaugural meeting until last month. They now plan to host online meetings on the first Wednesday of every month until pandemic restrictions are lifted.

Chairperson Tony Lawler said: “I’m really pleased that we managed to recruit enough volunteers for the community council to continue.

“It is important that local people have their say and are involved in shaping the things that impact on their lives and the community where they live, having a community council provides an avenue for people to do so.”

The group’s new secretary, Paula Kydd, said: “I’m looking forward to getting involved with the community council.

“Although we can’t meet face to face, we’re not letting covid stop us working together to improve our community.”

Since 2015, Foxbar and Brediland Community Council has represented the community in several consultations, organised community litter picks, supported gala days and community groups, taken part in a Scottish Government pilot project and created the Foxbar Place Plan, based on residents’ aspirations.

The community council also reintroduced the popular Foxbar gala day and has supported the development of the Community Garden Group.

Future plans involve investing in Durrockstock Park and improving cycle links.
