MacPherson delighted to get back on scoresheet for Saints

Cammy MacPherson admits his return to the scoresheet couldn’t have been any more emphatic.

The Buddies midfielder fired in an absolute beauty on his weaker foot to bag his first goal for the club since scoring against Celtic on Boxing Day in December 2019.

While it didn’t help the Saints topple the Lions on Saturday, it did earn the Paisley club what could be a precious point as they look to keep hold of their top six spot come the split.

The 22-year-old St Mirren academy product is desperate to make that happen to become a part of his club’s history.

He told Express Sport: “I’ve been long overdue a goal for a while now.

“To get one in that fashion was really pleasing.

“It’s a really good goal.

“There were the passes before it and then big Obika lays it off to me and I was thinking: ‘Just shoot and see what happens’.

“The wind helped it a bit but I couldn’t have hit it any sweeter. I saw the Livi defenders coming towards me and knew if I bent it round them the keeper wouldn’t see it.

“I think it took a wee nick off the post, so he wouldn’t have gotten to it.

“We haven’t finished in the top six (since the SPL was formed) and the gaffer has been saying that.

“So, that’s a bit of history we’re chasing. “That’s what everyone wants to do and be part of.”

Saturday’s stalemate with Livingston was the club’s third in a row as they chase that elusive top half finish.

With St Johnstone racking up another win, the pressure is now on the Buddies to strengthen their position in the Premiership table.

MacPherson knows they have to turn draws to wins to have any chance of being where they want to be come next month’s split, starting with the visit of Motherwell this Wednesday night - the club’s last game in hand on rivals Dundee United and the Perthshire Saints.

He said: “The point keeps us in the race for the top six and we are now looking forward to Wednesday night.

“It shows how confident we are that we are not happy that we didn’t get all three points against Livingston.

“We have come a long way.

“It’s another home game under the lights, so hopefully we take all three points. “We need the wins back.

“It’s quite close, so three points will be massive.

“They will be looking to put things right after a tough run.
