Surprise inspection leads to a positive report for care home

- STEPH BRAWN LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

A Renfrew nursing home has been praised for its care and support during the coronavirus outbreak, following a surprise inspection.

Craigielea Care Home was graded as “good” for people’s health and well-being, infection prevention and control, and staffing in a report published by the Care Inspectorate.

The French Street facility - which is run by Holmes Care Group Scotland Ltd - was praised for its person- centered plans, which outline residents’ needs.

Inspectors also said there were “effective monitoring systems” to promote good health outcomes.

The watchdog confirmed staff were following guidance when using personal protective equipment (PPE) and complimented laundry and catering procedures.

The report states: “We found staffing arrangements were sufficient to meet people’s needs. Person-centred plans contained information about residents’ needs. People were supported by staff who knew them well.

“There were e f f e c t i v e monitoring systems to promote good health outcomes.

“Feedback from families was positive and we were told that there had been regular communication from the service and opportunities for contact with residents. We observed staff correctly following the guidance for the use of PPE.

“Ample supplies of PPE were located at key points within the service. Laundry and catering arrangements were well managed.”

However, inspectors did insist some improvements still needed to be made, with the report nothing some areas of the home which needed further cleaning and maintenance.

“Quality assurance systems and overall governance for infection prevention and control could be developed further to improve the frequency and quality of staff observations, which support staff understanding and practice around infection control,” the Care Inspectorate added.

“The home was generally clean, however, there were some areas where the environment needed attention and maintenance to enable effective levels of cleanliness.”

The home provides support for up to 65 older people and 20 adults with a physical disability. The report was included in the latest round-up of inspections put before the Scottish Parliament.
