Determined Martin Ruddy has taken to the streets to get rid of his lockdown low feeling - and to help people who are on the brink of suicide.

And he said: “It works - I was feeling low and wanted to do something.

“This has made me feel much better.”

The 28-year-old lost his job at Renfrewshire Leisure where he was on a zero hours contract for events work.

He had to move back in with his mum in Seedhill, Paisley, after being unable to afford the rent on his flat.

But he is now on the march to raise funds for the Samaritans - and will complete 310,000 steps by the end of the month.

Martin has been out every day criss-crossing Paisley parks, Gleniffer Braes and Muirshiel Country Park at Lochwinnoch.

Some days he has hit nearly 20,000 steps on his quest.

He said: “I believe a lot of people are struggling with their mental health right now, and the work Samaritans do to help is amazing.

“I’ve been unemployed since the pandemic.

“I was furloughed by Renfrewshire Leisure but haven’t had any furlough pay for the last two months, so that’s all over.

“I had been in my flat for six months but could no longer afford to stay there, so I am happy to be back with my mum.

“I am back out there looking for work and to learn new digital stills, but just wanted to do something to help.

“Everyone has been affected one way or another - but if we can still find a way to support and be there for each other that’s what matters most.”

Martin revealed getting out and about every day has been the perfect tonic, especially the Gleniffer Braes.

As well as being great for mental stimulus, he says it is getting him fitter.

His mission began on March 1 and it will complete on the last day of the month.

He said: “If you are lost and thinking of ending it, please reach out to the Samaritans for help.

“But I would encourage everyone to get out and about in their own area, I have been enjoying discovering it.”

A tiny target of just £ 100 has been set on his Justgiving page, just to say thanks to the lifesavers.
