No covid deaths for first time in six months

- EDEL KENEALY

Renfrewshire has recorded zero covid deaths for the first time in six months.

New data, released by the National Records of Scotland, shows that no one died as a result of the virus in the week leading up to Sunday.

It is the first time no covid fatalities have been recorded since the start of October.

It means the covid death toll for the region remains at 521.

The news has been welcomed by Dr Linda de Caestecker, director of public health at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, who says the reduction in cases and the rollout of the vaccine is starting to show across the region.

She said: “Any reduction in Covid- 19 cases is hugely welcome and that is beginning to translate into lower pressure on our hospitals and, thankfully, fewer deaths.

“Progress is being made and this is testament to the commitment of all those

staff from across NHSGGC who have worked so hard to deliver the vaccination programme, and to the support of the people of Renfrewshire and beyond, who have come forward to receive their vaccine.

“I would like to thank them all for the part they have played in the fight against the virus.”

Vaccinators have now issued a first dose of either the Pfizer or Oxford AstraZeneca jab to 90,617 people in Renfrewshire.

This means 61 per cent of the adult population now has some protection against the virus.

A further 21,679 people have had their second jab, 14.6 per cent of those eligible.

Dr de Caestecker added: “While the news is encouraging, it does not mean we can let our guard down.

“The covid rates for Renfrewshire remain high compared to many other parts of Scotland.

“As restrictions begin to be lifted, it is especially important that we continue following the rules to help minimise the spread of the virus.

“The best way to reduce the risk of Covid-19 is to receive your vaccination when you are invited to do so and follow the guidance – wear a face covering, remember to socially distance, maintain good hand hygiene and if you do have symptoms, self-isolate and book a covid test via NHS Inform.”

Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “The past year has been a difficult time for everyone and I send my condolences to those who have lost a loved one during the pandemic, no matter the cause.

“While the news there were no deaths locally in the past week is welcome, it’s important that as restrictions begin to ease we keep following the rules that are in place and keep our Renfrewshire communities safe.”
