Hostage taker is back behind bars for attacking pal

Thug had been out of jail for a year when he punched friend

A violent yob who took a fellow inmate hostage with a home-made weapon has been locked up again for attacking his pal in a Paisley street.

Andrew Kinloch, 32, was caged at the High Court for the hostage incident at HMP Saughton where he and another lag, James Quinn, held victim Jason McLaren at knifepoint during a tense five-hour siege.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Kinloch, who was freed last year after serving six years behind bars, rained blows on his friend in Gallowhill Court high rise flats, Paisley, after a heavy drinking session on March 5.

Procurator fiscal depute Kara

Watt told the court: “A concierge at the building was working when he observed some sort of altercation taking place outside involving two males.

“One is the accused Kinloch. The other is the victim, Robert Barr.

“Kinloch was observed punching Barr repeatedly on the head and body.

“He then walked away from the victim. However, he returned later and stood outside the building.

“He appeared to be under the influence.”

The court heard a woman, 54, was out walking with her teenage son when Kinloch made a beeline for them and began “swinging his arms around” and “behaving aggressively”.

Ms Watt said: “The witness was left in a state of fear and alarm.

“Kinloch was heavily intoxicated and not in control of his actions.”

The woman left the area, but clocked where Kinloch was going before she called police.

The court heard he kicked off again at Viewpark Gardens, in Renfrew, on March 16 when cops found him out in the street.

The prosecutor added: “Police officers were tasked with attending the address in relation to the accused.

“They found him out in the street shouting and were attempting to take him back to his address when he became aggressive towards them.

“He was shouting and swearing such things as ‘c****’ and ‘a********’.”

When he was taken into custody,

Kinloch spat on the back seat of the patrol car and had to be transferred to a cell van, where vowed he was going to “kill” and “do in” the constables.

Kinloch, of Renfrew, appeared from custody where he pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Barr by repeatedly punching him on the head and body.

He also admitted public disorder by approaching the woman and her teenage son and behaving aggressively.

Kinloch also admitted another public disorder rap where he shouted, swore, uttered threats of violence and spat in the rear of a police vehicle.

A defence agent said his client had been drinking heavily with Mr Barr, who he claimed was his friend, when they had a disagreement.

He said: “He has a significant record and had been out of prison for about a year before getting into trouble again.

“It was because he was drinking. He was with a friend of his. They fell out. Both had been drinking that day.”

Sheriff Lindsey Kooner said she had no choice but to lock him up given his “very significant list of convictions”.

She handed him four and a half months behind bars, reduced from six months because of his early plea of guilty.

Kinloch was convicted of assault and abduction in 2013 for the hostage outrage at HMP Saughton, and had his sentence extended by two years followed by supervision.
