Leaflets discredit candidate

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A leaflet lout left hundreds of letters aimed at discrediting an SNP candidate strewn on Renfrewshire roads.

Fuming residents in Bridge of Weir, Quarriers Village and Houston reported finding papers linked to the upcoming Holyrood vote dumped on pavements and streets.

The ‘ ar t i c l e ’, wri t t e n anonymously, claimed SNP candidat e for Renfrewshire North and West Natalie Don failed to respond to the author’s email questions on independence.

Some on social media claimed a taxi driver was spotted leaving the material across the constituency.

Ms Don, the SNP councillor for Bishopton, Bridge of Weir and Langbank and MSP candidate Renfrewshire North and West, said she had reported the matter to police and Renfrewshire Council wardens.

She said: “It has been brought to my attention that a local resident has taken it upon themselves to dump letters concerning their own personal views for the upcoming election and against Scottish independence.

“These have been dumped on streets in various areas across the constituency.

She added: “No matter what your political views are, this action is wrong. I have reported this individual to Renfrewshire Council wardens and the police.

“Please be assured that if you receive any campaigning material from me personally then it will be put throughyour through your door door.

“People take great pride in keeping their areas tidy and fly-tipping like this is completely unacceptable.”

Some on social media hit out at the daft dumper.

One person wrote: “This is awful. How disrespectful to those who take the time to team up to clean up. No pride in their village.”

Another fuming poster added: “This individual has definitely no regard for the villages around this area.”

Another praised Ms Don for standing up for herself: “Fair play to Natalie Don for reporting to the council and police. Let’s just hope this individual is caught sooner than later and is given a hefty fine for dumping them. “There is no excuse for this behaviour.”
