Fast food fury erupts up on the bonny Braes

McDonald’s wrappers are being dumped in car park

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

Litter louts tarnishing one of Paisley’s most popular beauty spots with fast food wrappers have been blasted by Buddies.

People are driving up to the Gleniffer Braes car park to enjoy the view and munch on fast food from drive-thru diners.

Much of the debris left is from McDonald’s meals.

Dog walker Christine Campbell, who posted pictures on the Paisley Facebook site, said: “What a disgrace! “Can people not take their rubbish home with them! Shameful!!”

Her pictures sparked backing from people who love the unspoiled nature of the Braes.

Jonathan Donaldson said it was down to “kids in cars going up there for a takeaway and a smoke and possibly something else”.

Jonathan added: “It needs a camera to catch the number plates and see the rubbish being thrown.

“Fly-tipping fines imposed on the owner of the vehicle makes for a pretty expensive meal - or also put more and bigger bins and empty them daily.”

Meanwhile, Linda Muirhead said: “It’s an embarrassment.

“You travel round the world and see spotless countries then come back here to this grotty mess.

“Too many people take no pride in this country.”

Renfrewshire Council tries to tackle the blight of littering through the Team Up to Clean Up initiative which encourages residents to complete their own litter picks and help keep the area clean.

A team of litter pickers work in different areas in the local authority each week in a bid to rid the streets of rubbish. However, due to the covid pandemic, the team of six staff members were assigned to help with other essential services.

Conservative councillor James MacLaren wants the local authority to introduce LitterCam software to catch the culprits.

LitterCam captures and scans video footage and photographic evidence of the guilty drivers’ number plates.

Fines start at £90, increasing to £120 if there’s no payment within two weeks.

Councillor MacLaren said: “Far too many of our communities in Renfrewshire are continually spoiled by those who think it is OK to drop their litter out of their vehicles. vehicles.”
