People are being urged to remain vigilant to online and telephone scams after a number of people fell victim to cruel scammers in Renfrewshi­re in the last week.

The warning comes as part of a major month-long campaign by Renfrewshi­re and Inverclyde Police Division, aimed at tackling ruthless scammers and cruel fraudsters who prey on the most vulnerable people in our communitie­s.

It aims to provide people with informatio­n on the types of scams and schemes deployed by callous crooks, including online, on the phone and in person.

On April 12, an elderly couple in Renfrewshi­re fell victim to heartless fraudsters claiming to be from Virgin Media.

The couple were persuaded to divulge their banking details, including passwords and pin numbers, to the thieves.

Thankfully, quick thinking bank staff managed to prevent a large sum of money being withdrawn from the victims’ account by the suspects.
