Firefighters tackle grass fires close to woodlands
Drunken youths are being blamed for sparking a wildfire on the edge of Barrhead on Friday night.
Tinder-dry grassland and bushes rapidly caught alight, sending plumes of smoke into the town’s Springhill area.
Residents said a“large group of drunk kids”were responsible.
The area beside Springhill Road is next to the 30-acre Glanderston Wood wildlife haven.
Fire officers arrived around 9.30pm and a spokesman said:“We attended the scene of multiple grass fires on Springhill Road around 9.30pm on Friday , which resulted in large smoke plumes affecting the Springhill area of Barrhead.
“One appliance was mobilised to the scene and was there for some time.”
Police confirmed they were not called out.
