Anger at vandalism in school grounds

Window wrecked and bottles smashed on paths

- STEPHEN HOUSTON Inspector Michelle Grant

Youths are targeting a primary school at night, leaving smashed bottles on the grounds.

Condoms have even been found at St Thomas’ Primary in Neilston.

Now villagers are demanding a clampdown after pupils returned after the Easter holidays to find the Primary 1 class window had been smashed.

CCTV images have been captured of the culprits - they they are all wearing hoodies and masks.

Villager Charlene Allan said the damage was “infuriating.”

She said: “The young kids of St Thomas’ Primary came back after the break to an absolute wreck of a playground.

“Walkways, playgrounds and the memorial garden were strewn with glass and condoms .

“Please, if anyone hears anything from the school out with school hours please report it to police and help keep our children’s school a safe area to play.

“Every weekend, every holiday this is what our kids come back to and it’s totally unacceptable.”

Fiona Dickson- Currie believes smashing bottles has become a “culture.”

She added: “Can they not put the bottles into a bin or just leave them whole?

“Every pavement in the mornings have the same problem, take pride in your village.”

The village’s police inspector Michelle Grant confirmed no official reports of damage or vandalism at the school had been made.

But she added: “I have asked our community police to give extra attention where possible and also highlighted this to our teams.

“I would encourage the school to report the matter and I will ask our campus officer to link in with staff.

“As ever, if anyone has any information please contact ourselves on 101. I would also encourage parents to be aware of where their children are going at night and to discourage any from attending the playground of the school.”
