Kitten mauled to death as dog egged on scum’ by ‘ owner

- SARAH VESTY

A heartbroken cat owner has told how she heard her‘little baby’scream while being mauled to death by a dangerous dog outside the family home in Paisley.

Lucia Wright had gone into the back garden at around 9.30pm on Monday to bring little Humphrey back inside as darkness fell.

But the 31-year-old soon heard‘the worst sound ever’as two men ordered their off-the-lead dog to attack their 11-month-old kitten.

The panicked owner shouted at the two men, who verbally abused her, before running away and leaving the dog behind.

Humphrey passed away minutes later with his distraught owners by his side.

A police investigation into the shocking incident has now been launched.

Lucia said:“It was about 9.30pm on Monday when I went outside to get Humphrey back in because it was getting dark.

“That’s when I started to hear just the worst sound ever. I could kind of see two men out in the woodland behind our house before Elderslie Golf Course.

“I could hear them egging the dog on saying‘go, go, get him’and encouraging

him to kill. I shouted out ‘that better not be my cat’ but they were verbally abusive to me and told me to‘shut the f*** up’.

“I was extremely distressed, so I ran back inside to get my fiancé, Jeff.

“He came out, but the two men had run away and left the dog behind because they could obviously see that it had the kitten in its mouth.

“When my fiancé went out, the dog dropped Humphrey, but he died in the house a few minutes later.

“We called the police who came out to look for the men and the dog, but they couldn’t find anything.

“About two hours later, the neighbours ended up calling the police because the men had come back looking for the dog.

“They were shouting and screaming‘where’s my f******* dog’because they obviously couldn’t find it after they had run away.

“Four patrol cars came back out to look for them.”

No trace of the two thugs or the dog could be found.

Lucia added:“There’s nothing we can do for Humphrey now, but we wanted to make people aware of these men. They told the dog to do it.

“I would just hate for anybody else to be the target of these people. It wasn’t an accident, it was murder.

“We have no idea how long he was tortured for and we can’t bear thinking about that.

“It was a huge dog as well. It was a mixed breed, but he looked like a hunting dog that could have been an Alsatian crossed with a Dobermann. But we’re really not sure.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t get a proper look at the two men but they’re absolute thugs. Scum of the earth.

“I’m an animal lover and it’s not even like I would want anything to happen to the dog because it’s not his fault - it’s the owner’s fault.”

Paying tribute to Humphrey, Lucia said: “We got him at the start of the lockdown last year. He was a really good comfort to us and he was only recently allowed out after all his jags.

“He was our little baby.” Police Scotland confirmed they were made aware of the attack and, despite officers searching the surrounding area, no trace of the dog or owners was found.
