Blood gushed from wound in horror campaign of abuse

A violent thug caused his girlfriend’s C- section stitches to burst open after assaulting her as she tried to tend to their newborn baby.

Callous Adam Gallagher carried out numerous attacks on Charlene McGill in Paisley and Johnstone during their two-and-a-half year relationship.

One attack on her, committed just days after she’d given birth, left blood pouring from her caesarean wound, Paisley Sheriff Court heard.

During another, he turned up in a cab and punched her on the head so hard she saw flashes of light, before fleeing in the waiting taxi.

Gallagher then contacted her from jail trying to get her to lie about what had happened in a bid to be released from custody early.

The controlling brute also regularly berated and verbally abused her, damaged her phones, prevented her from contacting her friends, threatened her with violence and made her prove to him where she was.

And he made her delete her Facebook account and regularly demanded she give him money for drugs after he’d spent all his own cash on illicit substances.

He also repeatedly bit her on the head and body and poked her in the eyes, repeatedly pushed her while shouting and swearing at her, and rained punches on her head and body.

The details emerged when Gallagher, 35, appeared in the dock to plead guilty to two domestic abuse charges earlier this week.

He admitted assaulting her on two occasions between March 2018 and March 2019, at properties in Johnstone and Paisley.

And he admitted being abusive to her between April 2019 and August 2020 in Paisley.

Procurator fiscal depute Ed Sheeran said: “Around two months into her relationship with the accused, they were at the accused’s friend’s house.

“There was an argument and he slapped her on the face with the back of his hand.

“The accused’s friend was present and he has tried to stop the assault.

“The accused dragged her out of the living room by the hair and pinned her to the wall in the hall.”

On another occasion, just days after the birth of their son, Miss McGill was trying to tend to their child while still “in pain from the section”.

Gallagher attacked her as she stood up from the couch she’d been sitting on.

Mr Sheeran explained: “The accused pushed her back onto the couch, causing her stitches to burst and bleed.

“He would regularly poke her eyeballs and also bite her.

“He forced her to delete her

Facebook account as he believed she’d been speaking to other men.

“One time the accused arrived in a taxi and came up the stairs, she was under a duvet.

“He ripped it off and accused her of being unfaithful.

“He repeatedly punched her, so hard she saw flashes of light. Household items were falling onto her, but he continued to punch her.

“He went back to the taxi. The complainer followed and shouted to the driver, ‘ You keep bringing him back to hit me’.”

Defence solicitor Charlie McCusker said the couple had both struggled with addiction issues, with Gallagher hooked on heroin and Valium, while she was an alcoholic.

He said she told police they were “as bad as each other” and that he accepted what he’d done and that it was “completely unsavoury”.

After pointing out that Gallagher had been jailed in 2003, Sheriff James Spy called for background reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing.

He remanded Gallagher in custody, adjourned the case until next month and said this was to look in to having Gallagher supervised when he is released - to prevent him reoffending and protect the public and Miss McGill.
