Kick-off time nears for Saints’ free fitness programme

- DAVID CAMPBELL

A free fitness and well- being programme is about to kick off at St Mirren.

The 13-week Football Fans in Training course returns to in-person action after a forced hiatus during lockdown.

Delivered by the club’s charitable foundation, the sessions have made a huge impact on the lives of participants since they started in 2019.

Classes are spilt into two 45- minute sessions, with a fitness workout inside the SMISA Arena followed by an information session focussing on health, nutrition and well-being.

Open to people aged 35- 65, the programme, run in partnership with the SPFL Trust, aims to give those taking part a building block to take forward in their own lives.

Michael Campbell, St Mirren community development officer, said: “The course is an ideal starting point for people who want to make a positive change in their lives.

“It offers a foundation that they can build on and take forward into all aspects of their life.

“The sessions are spilt in two. We have fitness sessions, which are specially tailored to the level of those taking part, and then we have an information session with a different focus each week.

“We will cover good diet and the impact of alcohol.

“We also have a session signposting people to local groups that they might want to sign up to after.”

FFIT is open to men and woman, with the men’s course starting on Monday, May 10 and the women’s kicking off on Wednesday, May 12.

“If you think you could benefit from this course, please get in touch,” Michael added.

“A large number of people have already completed Football Fans in Training and the feedback we get is that it really has changed people’s lives.

“They have built new habits and carried them on.

“That is what it is all about.

“This is a great leaping off point into looking after yourself better and improving your life.

“It’s also really good fun and you will meet a whole group of people motivated to well.

“You don’t have to be a football fan to take part either.”
