Drink driver is fined and banned

-

Police acting on information that a pub-goer was in charge of a motor vehicle while drunk, saw him come out of a public house in the company of a sailor.

The boozy driver then jumped into a vehicle parked outside but, before he had the chance to drive away, two police officers approached.

It was 1955 and Depute Fiscal Smith stated that the man ran off, managing to escape from the police.

He climbed a cemetery wall and doubled back to the car, but one policeman had remained behind at the vehicle.

The driver was taken into custody and examined by a police doctor, who certified him as unfit to have proper control of a vehicle.

While he did not actually drive the car, said the fiscal, he was undoubtedly in charge of it.

An agent said that the accused had been driving since 1939 without any trouble.

He was in the motor trade himself but, because of the charge, he had lost his job.

The accused was fined £25, but was given the option of serving 30 days in prison, and disqualified for driving for one year.
