Cops seal off street after alleged attack

A 50- year- old man was rushed to hospital yesterday morning after being stabbed in an alleged targeted attack in Paisley.

Cops raced to Broomlands Street in the town around 9.15am following reports that a man was being seriously assaulted.

The busy street in the town’s west end was cordoned off from King Street down to Castle Street while emergency services raced to the scene.

The victim was rushed by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, with life- threatenin­g stab wounds.

Police remained in the area yesterday, with cordons kept in place for a number of hours.

I t ’ s understood some businesses were unable to get into their premises all day.

However, access to a nearby polling station was not obstructed and voters were able to access the building via King Street.

One business owner on the street said: “I heard a lot of shouting and then I heard all the sirens.

“There was an ambulance car, an ambulance and a response unit.

“There was a police van and about six police cars. They were all here very quickly.

“Then the plain clothes police arrived.”

Cops confirmed the incident was not related to the election.

An investigat­ion into the alleged attack has now been launched and detectives are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the area at the time to come forward.

Police also confirmed a 26-yearold man has been arrested in connection with the alleged serious assault.

Detective Inspector Ian Ross, from Paisley CID, said: “This has been a targeted attack, with the two individual­s known to each other, and one is now in a very serious condition in hospital.

“We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the attack, or has dashcam or CCTV footage, to get in touch via 101, quoting reference number 0666 of May 6, 21.”
