Ready, Jets, go

- ALISON RENNIE

Youngsters were delighted to get back in the saddle as their cycling club started back up.

The children are all members of the Johnstone Jets, the junior arm of the Johnstone Wheelers cycling club.

They were taking part in the popular Saturday morning sessions outdoors at the ON-X, in Linwood, which run from April till November.

The Johnstone Jets take part in Go Ride sessions, which is a British Cycling programme. They also enjoy mountain bike trails and go out on paths and quiet roads together.

They also hope to get back to The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome when it reopens in Glasgow.

Coach Kenny Steele said: “It’s fantastic to have the kids back. One or two of them weren’t too sure to begin with, but they were fine once they were back on their bikes and in the mix again.

“The grass gets pretty muddy at Linwood, so we normally run from April to November. We brought it forward a week to take advantage of lockdown easing.”

The members are aged from five to 17 and are split into three different sections according to their age.

There are currently 70 members with another 30 on the waiting list.

Kenny said: “We are fortunate to have quite a large team of coaches.

“We are trying to find a way to get all those on the waiting list into the club, but we need to have the right number of coaches and help.”
