Alan and Uma will share their Braw Tales thanks to theatre project

- ALISON RENNIE

Two Renfrewshire writers are taking part in an innovative online theatre project.

Kilbarchan playwright and nurse Uma Nada-Rajah and Alan Bisset, who lives in Lochwinnoch, are taking part in Mull Theatre’s Braw Tales.

Every day until Friday at 1pm a new short story and animation suitable for age 14+ will be released on the theatre’s social media and through its Vimeo channel then available on catch up.

Today, Uma’s story A Pickpocket’s Tale will be released.

Performed by Sarah Miele and animated by Cat Bruce, the story tells the tale of Isla who is bemoaning the state of her trade during the pandemic and then makes a new friend.

Tomorrow, Alan’s story The Shark Was Aware of Me will be released.

Performed by Alison Peebles and animated by Gavin Glover, the story is of Jemima who lives alone and doesn’t mind it that way until some bad news leaves her feeling shaken and isolated.

A chance encounter in the aquarium with a telepathic shark, however, makes her reassess her place in the grand scheme of things and inspires her to deliver a positive message to the world.

Beth Morton, Mull Theatre director, said: “There’s no denying the last 12 months have been difficult for so many and the impact on our physical and mental health has been immeasurable.

“Particularly in the latter part of this period, it’s felt a bit like walking through mud with not much to look forward to, more cancellation of plans for creating work, and very few work opportunities for freelance artists.

“Braw Tales is a project born very much from wanting to tackle all these things, the starting point being that I wanted to make something that would be fun and joyful, both for audiences to watch and for the artists in their creation process.”
