No catching Jemma

-

Kilbarchan AAC star Jemma Reekie showed she’s in top form ahead of the Toyko Olympics by producing an incredible outdoor PB win.

The talented 23-year-old lined up alongside training partner Laura Muir in the 800m at the USATF Golden Games in California on the Continental World Tour.

Billed as the biggest meet of the season so far, Reekie took the win with a new outdoor PB of 1:58.27 as Muir closed in for second place with 1:58.46 for a superb Scottish 1-2 for the duo and their coach Andy Young.

The pair topped what was a stacked field against some top American and Canadian opposition, with their runs landing Olympic qualifying marks ahead of the Tokyo Games which are still set to go ahead in July.

That’s despite the country currently battling the coronavirus pandemic, with growing opposition to the Games coming from Japanese citizens and the capital city currently in a state of emergency.

Canadian athlete Melissa Bishop-Nriagu was pushed back into third in 1:58.62 by Muir’s strong finish, in a race which also saw an Olympic qualifying time for GB’s Adelle Tracey at 1:59.50 in fourth place.
