Calls for insurance
A Renfrewshire councillor wants to see the introduction of compulsory home insurance.
Labour man Jim Sheridan will propose a motion at a meeting of the full council tomorrow, asking representatives to call on the Scottish and UK governments to introduce legislation making home insurance mandatory.
The elected member for the Houston, Crosslee and Linwood ward said: “I was approached by a constituent in the Houston area who said his neighbour did not have home insurance and he would have to claim against his own insurance for the damage and pay an excess.
“I think it is unfair that people should have to foot the bill because someone decides not to take out home insurance.
“I’m hoping that members back my motion and the council will then make representations about the possibility of introducing legislation making it compulsory for homeowners to have insurance in much the same way drivers must have car insurance.”
