Family firm whips up a new drive-thru bakery

14 jobs will be created when shop opens in the autumn

- EXPRESS REPORTER

A Scottish family bakery is opening its first drive-thru - costing £1million to build - at Hillington Park.

Bayne’s the Family Baker, a third generation family business founded in 1954 in Fife, operates 59 shops across Scotland and a manufacturing facility in Lochore close to the site of the company’s original shop.

It currently employs 560 staff across its business and will create 14 new jobs at the site when it opens in November.

Work on the £1m purpose-built facility is expected to be completed and handed over to Bayne’s in October.

The new 1,635 sqft scheme sits on a 0.8 acre site and includes 32 car parking spaces.

The construction contract has been awarded to Glasgow’s Bell Building Partnership.

The Hillington Park location will be the company’s seventh outlet opened in the West of Scotland in two years.

The company’s expansion into the ‘drive-up and drive-thru’ sector recognises the growing trend for easy access and convenience for consumers on the move.

The Bayne’s the Family Baker unit will be in an amenity zone - located in close proximity to Junction 26 on the M8 motorway - which already has a Starbucks drive-thru.

John Bayne, joint managing director at Bayne’s the Family Baker, said: “Much has changed since my grandfather started the business in 1954, but the business has grown successfully by retaining the family business ethos he set out with.

“When he opened the first shop more than 60 years ago, I don’t imagine he’d have envisaged people buying bakery products from a Bayne’s drive thru, or, indeed, how successful the company would become.

“We recognise that more people are looking for convenience and easy access to fresh bakery and coffee, so we are excited to be adding our first drive- thru outlet to the 59 other shops we operate across cities and towns in Scotland.

“Thousands of people work at Hillington Park every day and many thousands more pass close by on the M8 motorway, so it is the perfect place to locate this new, alternative way of selling our traditional and modern Scottish baked savoury and sweet products.”

Grant Edmondson, commercial director at Hillington Park, is delighted that the family brand is joining existing businesses at Hillington Park.

He said: “The combined appeal of the many thousands of people working in and visiting Hillington Park every day and a highly-visible site next to key transportation links makes our location a compelling business case for popular brands.

“For this main reason, Bayne’s the Family Baker has chosen their perfect location for its first drivethru store.”

Hillington Park is home to over 500 businesses employing over 8,000 staff and attracting thousands of consumers and commercial visitors every week.
