Husband who hit his wife can return home

Court lift bans as woman needs care

- RON MOORE

A court has lifted a ban on a husband who punched his disabled partner out of her wheelchair.

Manjit Singh, 34, attacked Sandeep Kaur, who has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair to aid her mobility, and left her lying slumped on the floor.

Singh was jailed for a total of 15 months last October and handed a Non Harrassment Order barring him from approaching or contacting the complainer.

However, he had the restriction lifted at Paisley Sheriff Court this week, which means he will be allowed to return to the family home in Inchinnan on his release from prison.

Defence agent Michael McKeown told how his client is Ms Kaur’s carer and normally looks after her and assists in attending to her needs.

He urged the court to revoke the order and allow him to resume his duties in assisting his partner and helping out with childcare for their young daughter.

He also revealed Ms Kaur has requested her partner be allowed to return to the address to help run the household.

He said: “Both parties have been in contact with me individually.

“Both she and he have set out their positions.

“She is fearful of not having any help with childcare and supervision while in her wheelchair, where her husband is her carer.

“She is very much struggling for some support and wishes to resume their relationship.”

Singh had attacked Ms Kaur in a booze-fuelled assault after she emptied a bottle of his vodka down the sink on July 3, last year.

He was arrested and released on special conditions of bail not to approach or contact his wife.

However, he repeatedly broke his bail on numerous occasions when he showed up uninvited, as well as phoning Ms Kaur and shouting abuse at her, demanding money, and accusing of her ruining his life.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife, repeated breaches of bail, and breaking a Non Harrassment Order.

Mr McKeown added Singh, who will be released from prison next month after serving half of his 15- month stretch, will remain abstinent from alcohol and wishes to return to his partner’s side.

Sheriff James Spy showed leniency to the couple by agreeding to lift the NHO.

He said: “Having regard to the complainer wishing to have the accused return to care for her, I will revoke the order.”
