Pots of love from pupils

Howwood kids dig in

- CARLA TALBOT

Youngsters at Howwood Primary School helped bring a little bit of sunshine to their classmates as part of a project for Mental Health Awareness Week.

Pupils at the school were all given some potted sunflowers to take home thanks to the hard work of the school’s eco committee and primary four class.

The group of schoolchildren took part in the Grow a Little Bit of Sunshine project as part of their studies surrounding Mental Health Awareness week which took place earlier this month.

All of the youngsters in primary one to seven - a total of 113 pupils - were given their own plant to take home to help promote the children’s health and well-being.

The purpose of the popular project - which was a hit with the pupils who took part - aims to improve well-being by giving the children the bright and cheery plant to look after and grow at home.

Headteacher Shirley Ormond said: “Our P4s are our eco committee and they decided to take part in the Grow a Little Bit of Sunshine project. Each pupil now has a plant to look after, which P4 pupils say is good for your well-being and they hope it helps other pupils.”

Meanwhile, it wasn’t just the primary four classes who got involved in activities.

Children from P3 got creative with their colouring pens and pencils and made some colourful rainbows as part of the well-being activities.

Their multicoloured artworks were then displayed on the class window throughout the week for passers-by to enjoy.

The talented pupils hoped their pictures would cheer up anyone walking past the school.

Schools, charities and other organisations throughout Renfrewshire have been taking part in activities and raising awareness of mental health as part of the national initiative which ran from May 10 to May 16.
