Ex-Buddie John McGinn in Scots 2020 Euro squad

-

Ex-St Mirren midfielder John McGinn will represent Scotland this summer after being picked in Steve Clarke’s Euro 2020 squad.

The Aston Villa star has been a mainstay in the national team’s starting XI in recent years, scoring an impressive ten goals in the last three years for his country.

So it was no surprise for former Buddies defender Clarke to select the bustling midfielder in his 26-man squad for the upcoming tournament that will see Scotland take on the Czech Republic, Croatia and England next month in the group stage.

There was no place for Saints academy graduate Kenny McLean, who was desperately unlucky to pick up a serious injury in his final game of the season for Norwich.

He was likely to have been picked by Clarke having become a well-used player in recent years at Hampden, with former St Mirren loanee and Scotland cap Lawrence Shankland also missing out on the final selection.

There were big call-ups for young uncapped trio David Turnbull, Billy Gilmour and Nathan Patterson, who have all been rewarded for fine recent performances for their clubs Celtic, Chelsea and Rangers respectively.

There was worse news for some more established Scotland players though, with Leigh Griffiths, Liam Palmer and Andy Considine all falling at the final hurdle.

Clarke’s full squad is: Gordon, McLaughlin, Marshall, O’Donnell, Patterson, Tierney, Robertson, Gallagher, Hanley, Cooper, Hendry, McKenna, Taylor, Turnbull, McGinn, Gilmour, Armstrong, McTominay, McGregor, Fraser, Adams, Dykes, Christie, Fleck, Nisbet, Forrest.
