Testing centre opens

-

More than 100 people turned out for a Covid-19 test within hours of a new mobile unit opening in Paisley’s Glenburn.

The temporary testing facility for people with or without symptoms of the virus opened in the car park of Glenburn Community Centre at 9.30am on Sunday.

It had tested 130 people by 3pm.

For people who live, work or attend school in the Glenburn and Foxbar areas of the town, the testing centre aims to identify people who may unknowingly have Covid-19 and be passing it to others.

Crucially, it is also offering tests to those displaying symptoms such as a new, continuous cough, a fever and loss in taste and or smell.

It has been deployed to Glenburn as new covid cases across Renfrewshire continue to rise.

In the week to Friday, a total of 115 new cases had been identified, peaking for the month with 28 cases on May 19 alone.

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Council which is running the testing centre said: “We thank everyone who has come along to the testing unit so far and we would encourage as many people in the area as possible – whether you have symptoms or not - to come down. “

The testing unit will remain in Glenburn until Sunday and opens daily between 9.30am and 6pm.

People attending are asked to book an appointment in advance, with the results of the highly accurate PCR test provided via email or text message within 24 to 48 hours.

Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron urged everyone to continue to play their part to help stop the spread of covid.

She said: “Cases have been rising across the region and as a council we are doing everything we can to manage and stop the spread, whether that’s testing through our schools or local community testing in areas where cases have been high.

“That is why the council has taken swift action with additional community testing being deployed in the south of Paisley and I would encourage anyone who lives in Glenburn or Foxbar to come along and get tested and do their bit to help protect themselves, their loved ones and their community.”
