End of an era for store

-

Marks & Spencer veteran Sandra Humphreys will turn the key in the lock for the last time at the Paisley High Street store tonight.

Sandra has worked for the iconic retailer for 43 years and was specially chosen to mark the moment in time.

She will end the era with a ceremonial locking of the door as M&S bail out of 15 High Street after 89 years.

Sandra and colleagues will then mark the end with a small private event.

The firm is closing many high street clothes stores, shifting the focus to food shops within retail parks.

When the High Street store opened on November 20, 1931, it drew massive crowds.

It was the firm’s third store in Scotland and has been a key anchor over the generations in the High Street.

The new foodha l l employing 80 opens at Wallneuk Retail Park tomorrow morning, with former High Street staff shifting over.

Manager Kirk Russell said: “We understand some people will be disappointed by the store’s move, but we believe this decision will ensure the best possible offer for customers in Paisley.”

An M& S spokeswoman confirmed Sandra Humphreys will also have a role at the gala opening of the new shop.
