New app will put Paisley’s successful music history on the map
Team will deliver walking tour
A new walking tour app designed to take users on a journey through Paisley’s musical history is in the works.
Paisley’s Musical History project is a collaboration between Renfrewshire Council and Renfrewshire Leisure’s award-winning Art Boss group of young creative producers.
The free, downloadable app will allow music lovers to move through the town’s musical landmarks from the mediaeval score discovered in the Abbey Drain to the town’s Punk scene.
The £ 10,500 project is being delivered through the Paisley TH. CARS2 programme, which is jointly funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and Renfrewshire Council.
The hunt is on for a producer to create the app ahead of its proposed launch at the start of this year’s Spree Festival in October.
A Creative Scotland spokesman said: “Renfrewshire Council is seeking to appoint (through a competitive tender process) an experienced and imaginative producer with a community focused practice.
“The main output of the Paisley’s Music History project will be a free, downloadable tour designed for a walking app platform which will lead users on a journey through Paisley’s musical history.”
The producer will be involved in workshops on the exact route and content of the app along with Art Boss
Paisley has a rich musical history with bands from across the world coming to play at one time or another.
The explosion of punk in the early 1980s placed Paisley at the forefront of a scen changing the landscape forever.
When Glasgow City Council banned bands from playing in the city, they simply moved a few miles down the road where a music loving public lapped up the big names in bars like The Bungalow.
The Clash, The Rezillos, The Boomtown Rats, Elvis Costello, The Buzzcocks and a band then known as Johnny & The Self-Abusers, who would go on to become Simple Minds all took to the stage in Paisley.
Paisley’s own Gerry Rafferty went on to become one of the most recognisable names in British folk and rock, while in more recent times Paolo Nutini has released a series of number one albums propelling him into super-stardom.
It’s expected the new app will include all the seminal spots that have helped put Paisley on the musical map.
