Call-up joy for McGrath

-

Saints star midfielder Jamie McGrath has been called-up for the Republic of Ireland squad for their friendlies against Andorra and Hungary.

It is the first call- up for the 24- year- old, who has celebrated a stand out season for St Mirren, helping the club finish in its highest stop flight position since 1989.

The Irishman scored 17 goals in 46 appearances throughout the season and bagged himself a handful of man-of-the-match awards for his performances.

His stellar efforts earned him the club’s official Player of the Year award.

McGrath’s call- up for his national team is literally a dream come true, having previously told Express Sport he hoped his on-pitch performances would catch the attention of Ireland’s national boss Stephen Kenny.

McGrath said: “If I was to be called in it would be amazing. I never dreamed as a young kid that I would ever make it into the senior team.

“It would be the ultimate honour. I grew up watching them on TV, so to pull on that strip for the senior squad would be incredible.”

A spokesman from St Mirren said: “Everyone is delighted for Jamie to receive his first callup and wish him all the best in his time away with Ireland.”
