Lout’s shame after attacking his stepmum

Yob too drunk to recall vicious assault

- RON MOORE

A yob awoke from a drunken stupor and attacked his stepmum as she was checking to ensure he was OK.

Kris Findlay, 25, assaulted Penny Findlay, 64, by grabbing hold of her to stop her calling cops to the family home in Barrhead.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Findlay had returned to the property at Fereneze Grove on April 28 after a heavy boozing session, but he did not make it to his bedroom.

Instead, the shop worker collapsed on the landing, where his worried stepmum found him after going to check on him.

Procurator fiscal depute Kirsten Brierley told the court: “The witness had been in her bedroom watching TV.

“She exited her bedroom at 11pm and entered the landing where she observed the accused lying on the floor in a state of heavy intoxication.

“Believing he had passed out, she attempted to raise him.

“After some time, he awoke.

“He began rambling in an incoherent manner at the witness to the extent that she felt threatened and went to her bedroom to pick up her phone in an attempt contact police.

“The accused entered her bedroom, grabbed her by her arms, resulting in him getting the phone from her.

“The witness has then pushed her community emergency alarm, which she wears around her wrist.

“The accused went downstairs and the witness contacted police, who arrived at the house where the accused was cautioned and charged.”

Findlay, formerly of Barrhead, but now staying with a relative in Edinburgh, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner where he shouted, swore and uttered a threat, as well as assaulting Mrs Findlay by seizing hold of her by the body.

Defence agent Gerry McLure said his client was “deeply ashamed” by his behaviour towards his stepmum, who had adopted him as a 13-year-old boy.

He said: “He doesn’t remember what happened that night. However, he is prepared to accept what his stepmother reported to police.

“The relationship with his stepmother has ended since the incident and he is staying with another relative.

“He very much regrets his actions and is deeply ashamed of how he behaved.

“He has also accepted responsibility for his actions at the earliest opportunity.”

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew told him that whatever the court decides, “you will have a conviction for assaulting your stepmother and that is the be all and end all of things”.

He fined Findlay £200 and added: “I hope you are able to mend fences with your stepmother in time.”
