Families get up close to nature

-

Getting children into the outdoors and learning about their surroundings was the goal of the Wild Child Challenge.

It was staged by the RSPB team at the Lochwinnoch reserve last weekend.

The event was a feather in the cap for the centre, which is trying to attract more people as restrictions evaporate.

Activities were set up along trails to encourage the kids to engage and have fun.

Rob Conn, visitor experience manager, said: “The challenge was for children to get closer to nature by using their senses.

“It is these connections that will hopefully stick with them.

“We told them how bees smell with their feet and asked them what they could smell, what they liked and what they didn’t.

“They were also told to pretend they were frogs and how many jumps they needed to reach the lily pad.

“We hung discs around trees and asked them to scavenge around and discover what type of food blackbirds eat.”

Rob added: “The participants were asked to hold their breath for as long as they could, to see how a duck feels underwater.

“We are hoping things start taking off in the better weather, it’s a great place to be.”
