ON THE MOVE

-

An elderly widow was asked to quit her home of 32 years – so a family of 13 could be reunited again for the first time in more than three years.

It was Christmas, 1965, and the MacKenzie family hadn’t been together since the summer of 1962.

Twins Ann and Gordon MacKenzie, six, and their young sister Moira, who was four, had been cared for in a children’s home.

This was because Renfrew District Council didn’t have any houses big enough to accommodate the whole family.

But, in December, 1965, the council agreed in principle to give the MacKenzies a house across the landing, which was owned by Mary McCann – as long as she agreed to be rehomed.

They hoped to have Mrs McCann out by Christmas so the MacKenzie family could be together once again.

But, as plans were going ahead to knock a hole in the wall dividing the two three-apartment houses, Mrs McCann said:“No-one has told me I’m moving.”
