Linwood’s desperate housewives

-

Fulton, 22, of Clippens Road, Linwood, whose husband William, 24, was one of the 2,000 men laid off.

The mum-of-two said: “We’ve had enough. My husband was a shipyard welder before we came out here from Glasgow to start a new life.

“On Monday, he’s going back to Glasgow to look for a new job. We just can’t carry on the way we have been doing.

“And we can’t exist without a steady wage. Everything is so expensive. We have to buy mainly from vans – and that is usually dearer than the shops.

“We wanted to give our children the chance of a good healthy life outside the city but things just haven’t worked out.

“I know of many folk who have given up their job at the factory and gone back to the city.”

Margaret Campbell moved to Linwood 11 months prior with her husband William and their two kids.

She said: “We are shocked and distressed at all this industrial trouble, but we like life in Linwood and it is right for our children.

“We will stay but we hope with all our hearts that peace comes soon and we can settle to the life we came here to enjoy.”
