A 22-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly being caught with a machete during a street rammy.

Police were called to Stevenson Street, Paisley, on Saturday night following reports of a large disturbanc­e.

Officers attended the scene and spoke to bystanders.

After gathering informatio­n, a man was identified as allegedly being involved in the bust-up and being armed with a large machete.

When spoken to, he is alleged to have become abusive towards officers by shouting and swearing at them. He is also said to have resisted arrest by struggling with police.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed a machete had been recovered at the scene by officers.

He added: “Officers attended at Stevenson Street following a number of reports of a large disturbanc­e.

“Following enquiries with those at the scene, a 22- year- old man was identified as being involved in the incident. He has been arrested in connection with weapons charges and public disorder charges.

“A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
